- Artist is an approved teaching artist from the Iowa
Arts Council’s Teaching Artists Roster.
- Artist has confirmed his/her participation in writing. Use
the Artist
Confirmation Form.
- Residency provides students with in-depth, active, hands-on experiences
in the arts.
For planning tips, see the Checklist
for Planning a Successful Artist Residency or Collaboration.
- Residency is at least 5 days long. Longer residencies are
encouraged.
- Planning meeting with artist(s) is scheduled.
Must be held at least one month before the beginning date of the residency. An
on-site planning meeting is preferred. The meeting should last 3-4 hours and include
a site visit to the facility. If the artist must travel more than 100 miles (one
way) to the site, the planning meeting may be conducted via a phone conference
call and should last approximately two hours.
- Written contract will be generated once project funding is secured.
Contract must acknowledge that all parties will conduct the residency according
to the AISC Residency Model and IAC policies and
guidelines. The agreement must specify the date of the planning meeting, specific
dates of the residency, and the estimated budget and payment schedule. Sample
contracts are available.

- Artist payment for planning meeting(s) is at least $200 (for
on-site meeting) or $25/hour (for phone conference call).
Artists/performing groups set their own planning meeting fees—this is the
IAC’s required minimum.
- Artist payment for residency is at least $200/day for a minimum
of 5 days. Artists/performing groups set their own residency fees—this
is the IAC’s required minimum.
- Artist’s travel and subsistence (for both the residency and
an on-site planning meeting, if held) will be paid (at minimum) at IAC
current rates.
If residency involves more than one artist (artist companies or multi-disciplinary
residencies) and depending whether they travel together or separately, travel
expenses can be multiplied by the number of artists involved.
Current Rates:
Lodging: $68 + tax for lodging Mileage: $.34 per mile
Meals: $35 per day Ground transportation (e.g., taxi): prevailing rate.
- Teacher will be present in classroom at all times.
This is a legal requirement in schools, as well as being important to a successful
residency. The teacher and artist/s are expected to work cooperatively throughout
the residency to maintain a productive working environment in the classroom.
- At least one core group is identified; will meet regularly with the
artist during the residency to achieve learning goals.
One or more exposure groups may also be part of the residency (other students
outside the core group who work with the artist/s on a limited basis), but the
artist’s primary activities should be on the core group.
- Artist is scheduled for no more than 4 contact sessions per
day in a 5-day residency.
Contact sessions include classes with students, structured in-service training
or classes with teachers, and demonstrations or performances meeting the community
involvement component. The artist and sponsor may negotiate the daily contact
sessions for the remaining days of residencies lasting longer than five days.
- Artist is scheduled for no fewer than 4.5 contact hours per
day in a 5-day residency.
The artist and sponsor may negotiate the daily contact hours of the remaining
days of residencies lasting longer than five days.
- 5-day residency includes at least 2 hours of paid artist-teacher contact
time.
Contact time may include in-service workshops with many teachers, private meetings
with the core teacher, student evaluation, assessment and hands-on activities,
planning and follow-up activities, or arts program consultation.
- Residency allows adequate non-contact time for artist.
Non-contact time allows artists to plan and prepare for the day’s activities and
personal time during the day and evening. Upon request of artists, adequate office,
studio or rehearsal space must be available for them to work undisturbed.
- Project includes an opportunity to share some aspect of the residency
with parents and/or the community.
For example, sponsors may invite the community to a student performance or student
exhibit, an exhibit or performance of work by the artist, or a “Meet the Artist”
night.
- Residency activities will be documented, and student learning will
be assessed.
Teacher(s) and artist(s) should plan documentation and assessment measures together,
at the planning meeting.
- Artist will receive payment on or before the last day of the residency,
whether or not IAC funds have been received by that time.
For residencies of 10 days or longer, the artist and the sponsor must agree to
a payment schedule at the planning meeting. Whenever possible, the sponsor is
encouraged to pay for lodging expenses up front. Failure to pay artists for their
fees and expenses by the last day of the residency or payment schedule will jeopardize
future funding requests.
