Hands-on Seminar for Artists
“Artists as Educators: Planning Effective Workshops for Teachers”
July 14 and 15, 2005
Application Deadline: May 1, 2005
Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa
and Waterloo Community Schools are offering a hands-on seminar designed to develop
the skills of artists and educators in presenting educational workshops for teachers.
The seminar will be presented on July 14th and 15th at the Gallagher Bluedorn
Performing Arts Center, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Designed and developed by the John
F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the two-day seminar, “Artists
as Educators: Planning Effective Workshops for Teachers” addresses ways
to plan, develop, and present workshops for teachers. It includes participation
with teachers in an arts education workshop as well as guided development of a
workshop proposal. The seminar is appropriate for artists and arts educators who
have had experience performing for or teaching children.
The program was developed by the Kennedy Center as an outgrowth of a series of
professional development opportunities for teachers. In 1991, the Kennedy Center
initiated the Performing Arts Centers and Schools: Partners in Education program,
designed to create and encourage partnerships throughout the United States between
arts-presenting organizations and their local school systems, with a special emphasis
on the professional development of teachers. Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts
Center at the University of Northern Iowa and the Waterloo Community Schools were
selected to participate in the program in 2003.
The workshop being presented on July 14th, “Living Pictures: A Theatrical
Technique for Learning Across the Curriculum,” is also open to registration
by area teachers of Grades 2 – 8. Sean Layne, who since 1989 has performed
in thousands of schools, museums, libraries, and theaters with the Interact Story
Theatre, will lead the workshop. Kimberli Boyd, a dancer, performing artist and
artist educator working with the Kennedy Center will lead the seminar.
Up to 15 artists and/or arts educators will be selected for the seminar. The application
deadline is May 1st. For an application or for more information contact Amy Hunzelman,
GBPAC Director of Education and Outreach at 319.273.3679 or via email at amy.hunzelman@uni.edu.
