Iowa Project Featured in Smithsonian Magazine
The small town of Oxford, Iowa, is getting some big attention thanks to photographer Peter Feldstein.
An article in the June issue of Smithsonian Magazine highlights Feldstein’s project to collect photographs of every resident of Oxford (pop. 673). It began in 1984 when Feldstein set up shop on Oxford’s main street with a sign advertising free portraits. By the time he was finished, he’d captured 670 of the town’s residents.
In 2005, Feldstein went back to Oxford with the same goal. Although some had died or moved away, many of the same residents remained. With Iowa writer Stephen Bloom, Feldstein collected images of the same faces 21 years older while Bloom collected their stories.
The Oxford Project, as it is now known, has created a nationwide buzz now
played out on the pages of a national magazine. Read the complete article
