Storycorps: Recording America MobileBooth Makes Ames Stop

WOI Radio Group will host a StoryCorps MobileBooth during the month of July when it comes to Ames to record Iowans’ stories.

StoryCorps is a national project to instruct and inspire people to record each others’ stories in sound. Sponsored by National Public Radio (NPR) and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the StoryCorps Mobile Tour is now in its second year. In its first year, the Mobile Booths visited 37 towns in 25 states. The MobileBooths are traveling recording studios enveloped in an icon of American design – a classic 26-foot Airstream trailer that is wheelchair accessible.

The MobileBooth will be parked at the corner of Main Street and Burnett Avenue in downtown Ames July 6-30.

Here’s how you can participate:
• Choose an interview partner, like a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend (all participants must be 10 years or older)
• Make a reservation for a StoryCorps recording session. Reservations can be made by visiting http://storycorps.net or calling (800) 850-4406. The suggested donation is $10.
• Conduct your interview or tell your story. You’ll have 40 minutes for the interview. A facilitator will sit with you in the booth, making a digital recording with broadcast-quality equipment.
• Take home a copy of your interview on CD. With your permission, a copy of your interview will go to the StoryCorps Archive, housed in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. You can also make your interview available for broadcast on your local public radio station.
