News from the NEA

Four cultural organizations in Iowa are the recipients of National Endowment for the Arts Access to Artistic Excellence grants. The NEA will distribute more than $20 million in this round of FY2006 funding to nonprofit national, regional, state, and local organizations across the country.

Access to Artistic Excellence grants support the creation and presentation of work in the discipline of dance, design, folk and traditional arts, literature, local arts agencies, media arts, museums, music, musical theater, opera, presenting, theater and visual arts. Projects include commissions, residencies, workshops, performances, exhibitions, publications, festivals and professional development programs.

The following organizations have been awarded Access to Artistic Excellence grants:

Cedar Rapids Opera Theater
$10,000
To support a production of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah. Outreach activities will include a free performance for youth and adults served by Big Brothers Big Sisters, Osada and the McAuley Center for Women.

Edmundson Art Foundation, Inc. (a.k.a. Des Moines Art Center)
$50,000
To support the touring exhibition of work by contemporary New York-based British artist Cecily Brown, with an accompanying catalogue and education programs. The exhibition will provide an overview of Brown’s mature work from 1998 to the present, emphasizing her varied approaches to painting the human figure.

University of Iowa – Hancher Auditorium
$10,000
To support the presentation of the Joffrey Ballet. The Joffrey will perform at Hancher Auditorium and tour to Des Moines, Okoboji and Cedar Rapids.

University of Iowa – University of Iowa Press
$8,000
To support publication costs and related expenses for winning selections from the Iowa Short Fiction Award and John Simmons Short Fiction Award competitions. Launched in 1970, past winners of the awards include Susan M. Dodd, Dan O’Brien, and Marly Swick.
