State Center Awarded Cultural Express Grant
The Iowa Arts Council has awarded an $8,000 grant to the Gutekunst
Public Library in State Center to present a series of folklife programs in Central
Iowa in collaboration with other libraries and their communities.
Public libraries in Ames, Le Grand, Marshalltown and State Center will work in
partnership to present Cultural
Express programs at venues in each community. Funded in part by a grant from
the National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America: Access to Arts Grant, the
Cultural Express program was created in collaboration with traditional artists
and communities in Iowa to bring diverse traditional arts to libraries and museums
throughout the state.
The series of nine live, two-hour programs offers traditional music, foods, dance, rituals and crafts from a variety of groups living in Iowa. It uses table-top exhibits, resource kits for activities and live programs to explore Bosnian, Danish, American Indian, Lao and Asian-Indian folklife, as well as Gospel, Blues, Latino and Old Time Anglo-Scots-Irish traditional music.
In addition to the libraries, the Marshalltown YMCA, Marshalltown Community College and the City of Ames will provide venues for the programs.
Apply Now for ICCG Grant
Cultural organizations in Iowa are encouraged to apply for the 2006 Iowa Community Cultural Grant (ICCG). Applications are due February 1, 2006 by 4:30 p.m. in the IAC office (State Historical Building – 3W, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines IA 50319). This is not a postmark deadline.
ICCG provides matching grants that range from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum $25,000. While one-quarter of available funds are awarded to projects that were not in existence last year, projects that represent a significant enhancement or expansion of a previously established project may also qualify as new projects.
“Projects can include new museum exhibits, festivals, historic restoration and archaeology projects, or ethnic heritage projects,” said ICCG coordinator Riki Saltzman. “Applicants should focus on how this money will be used for salary support for positions like administrative staff, curators or exhibit designers. Funding such positions enhances Iowa’s artistic, cultural and historical resources.”
Nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations that promote and develop the arts, history or historic preservation, culture, ethnicity, tourism, economic development, festival or municipal libraries are eligible to apply. City and county governments, and tribal councils are also eligible. Schools, colleges, universities and religious organizations are not eligible to apply.
For more information call Riki Saltzman at 515.242.6195.
