Cultural Advocacy Day Set for January 23-24


Iowa Cultural CoalitionShow your support for culture in Iowa by attending Cultural Advocacy Day January 23-24 at the State Historical Building in Des Moines.

This year’s Cultural Advocacy Day is coordinated by the Iowa Cultural Coalition and will focus on the Iowa Great Places initiative. Participants will have an opportunity to show their support for this project to their legislators. Iowa Great Places creates Iowa communities that are vibrant Iowa Great Placeswith an integrated quality of life where people choose to live, work, visit, stay and play.

“Our goal for the upcoming legislative session is to keep the Iowa Great Places initiative in front of legislators’ minds,” said Rod Scott, president of the Iowa Cultural Coalition. “People who want their communities to become ‘Great Places’ are welcome to attend and show their support.”

Workshops will be held Monday, Jan. 23 on different facets of Iowa Great Places where participants will learn how to incorporate historic preservation, arts and business in a variety of ways to improve economic development, strengthen cultural and tourist attractions, develop cultural districts and more. Monday evening a legislative reception and gathering will be in the East Village from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 24 will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration at the State Historical Building, followed by a rally at 9:00 a.m. with Rod Scott. The march to the Capitol will begin at 10:00 a.m. Once participants reach the Capitol, a program from 10:00 a.m. to noon will feature addresses by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack and several legislators.

All participants will be encouraged to meet with their legislators while at the Capitol. Department of Cultural Affairs grant recipients will have the opportunity to have photos taken with their legislators throughout the remainder of the morning. Additional Great Places workshops will be held in the afternoon.
