Youth Art Month and Poster Contest

March is Youth Art Month

The winning entries in a statewide art competition involving Iowa school students will be on display at the State Historical Museum in Des Moines throughout the month of March.

The competition, sponsored for the 16th year by Art Educators of Iowa, gathers works by Iowa students in grades K -12. The winning 100 entries will be on display in the State Historical Museum, while a dozen “best of show” entries will be displayed in the Governor’s Office.

A special reception celebrating the artistic success of these students will be March 11 from noon to 3:30 p.m. Students, their parents, arts educators, legislators and the public are invited. The celebration helps direct attention to the value of art education in developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, community awareness and technical, communication and expressive skills.

The State Historical Museum is located at 600 E. Locust in Des Moines. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m. Call 515.281.5111 for more information.
