Accessibility, Internships, Grantwriting and HGTV

Eye on Accessibility

Eye on Accessibility is a new monthly feature in the Iowa Arts Council newsletter dealing with accessibility issues for cultural organizations.

When your organization is planning or reviewing its physical accessibility, make sure to ask people with various disabilities to be involved in the plan/review. No hearing person or sighted person can truly know how a person who is deaf or blind will respond to a particular program element or change in physical design.

April Grant Writing Tip

Make sure the details are accurate! Did you indicate your organization’s legal name and address? Are you absolutely sure that you have entered the correct Federal Tax Identification number? Did you include an email address that is a) accurate and b) actually in use, so that we can contact you if needed? Are you absolutely sure your application will arrive at the IAC office by the deadline date and time? (Remember — even with the new eGRANT system, some materials still need to be mailed or delivered to the IAC office by the deadline.) These are small details that can make or break your application.

eGRANT Tip: Tired of trying to keep track of all your user IDs and passwords on the Internet? The Iowa Arts Council’s new eGRANT system only requires you to register once for any grant you may be applying for. And of course, if you forget your login information, you can always send an email to iac.egrant@iowa.gov to retrieve it.

Internships!

As the end of the school year nears, college students are in the midst of seeking summer internships. If your cultural organization is seeking an intern, the Iowa Arts Council offers free listings of intern opportunities on its Web site, www.iowaartscouncil.org.

Listings can include opportunities in performing arts venues, cultural arts groups and event planning organizations.

Contact IAC’s Sarah Ekstrand at 515.281.4657 or Sarah.Ekstrand@iowa.gov to submit information, which should include the organization’s name; contact person; beginning and end dates of internship; hours per day, week or month; whether the position is paid or unpaid; a job description and other applicable information.

Be on HGTV!

The Home and Garden Network’s hit series That’s Clever! (formerly called Crafters Coast to Coast) is making stops around the country to tape unique and funky artwork and the people who make them. A crew will visit you in your home and profile you, your hometown and your craft. They are now casting for another season in Los Angeles and will be taping May 9 through May 23, 2006 (They note that it’s never too late to submit since they may revisit cities in future seasons). If you are an undiscovered artist or crafter who lives within an hour of Des Moines and are interested in being part of this series, please send an e-mail to linsana@WellerGrossman.com for an application. Or go to www.HGTV.com to find the listing in the “Be on HGTV” section.
