Rep. Jim Leach Receives Congressional Cultural Champion Award
The
Iowa Cultural Coalition presented U.S. Rep. Jim Leach, R-Davenport, its first
Iowa Congressional Cultural Champion Award Tuesday, March 14 during the federal
cultural lobby day in Washington, D.C. Rep. Leach has championed arts and humanities
endowment funding, arts in education as well as Very Special Arts funding for
those with disabilities. Rep. Leach also actively supports historic preservation
funding and programs. In attendance at the presentation ceremony was Linda Von
Bank, Iowa Arts Council board member; Anita Walker, director, Iowa Department
of Cultural Affairs and Rod Scott, president, Iowa Cultural Coalition.
The Iowa Cultural Coalition serves as the main education/advocacy organization in Iowa with a membership representing all areas of Iowa’s cultural community. The cultural health of Iowa determines the economic vitality and quality of life for the State of Iowa. The Iowa Cultural Coalition gives a face to cultural endeavors in Iowa and allows cultural workers to create and care for the resources, which make our state an incredible place to reside.
In addition to organizing the annual Cultural Advocacy Day event at the State
Capitol, the ICC also plans trip to Washington, D.C. for cultural advocacy at
the federal level. Each year, the ICC board of directors will award state and
elected officials with its cultural champion award for work at the local, state
and federal level.
