After the Hurricanes…

Many artists have lost their homes and studios, and many arts organizations have been devastated following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the southern U.S. The Iowa Arts Council is continuously adding to its compilation of information about how to help affected arts and cultural organizations.

To find out how you can help, with your financial contributions and even by hiring displaced artists, take a look at our ever-expanding list of opportunities.

The hurricanes of 2005 are a particular wake-up call to all arts and cultural organizations. National Endowment for the Arts, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Heritage Preservation, have updated and released a guide designed to help archives, arts centers, libraries, museums, historical societies and historic sites find the resources they need in times of disaster.

Before and After DisastersIn light of Hurricane Katrina, the NEA now has the updated guide available for download on its Web site at www.arts.gov/pub/DisasterRecovery.pdf. Titled Before and After Disasters: Federal Funding for Cultural Institutions, the guide covers sources of federal assistance for preparedness, mitigation and response, as well as for recovery. Sample projects in disaster planning, training, treatment research and restoration illustrate the funding guidelines.
