The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent

The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for TalentIn his new book, The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent, Richard Florida suggests the notion that states may not just be losing their best and brightest to other states, but, indeed, to other countries.

According to Florida, America’s magnetism for creative workers has weakened as the drawing power of other nations—such as Tallinn, Estonia; Dublin, Ireland; and Sydney, Australia—has become supercharged, owing to regulatory policies, quality of life, tolerance and a range of other issues. Visit www.creativeclass.org for more information.

Florida will also be a keynote speaker at the “Creative Problem Solving Institute” on June 27 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul as part of his “Flight 2005 World Tour.” For more information, visit www.cpsiconference.com.

PBS’ Art:21 Season Three Screening Seeks Hosts

Art:21 Season Two BookArt:21—Art in the 21st Century is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit.

Fascinating and intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic visions.

Season Three is set to air in the fall of 2005, and Art:21 invites organizations and individuals to host screenings of the four-part series in August and September.

Screening events often incorporate guest speakers such as local artists, curators or critics; panel conversations to discuss the featured themes or artists in more detail; town meeting forums for wider public participation and response; or a brown bag lunch component. Presentations to school districts or museum staff or community groups introduce the series as well as the educational materials and resources that accompany it.

For more information on how to host a screening, visit www.pbs.org/art21.
