News from the NEA
Arts in Education
The Senate subcommittee responsible for Department of Education appropriations
has reported its fiscal year 2006 money bill with $35.7 million for the arts in
education program, representing an increase of $100,000 over funding for 2005.
The increase is slated for a discretionary grant awarded by the Department of
Education to support innovative approaches in arts education.
The president's budget had included the arts in education program among several Department of Education activities slated for elimination, and the House appropriations bill had followed suit.
As in past years, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee restored the arts education money, with a slight increase, due to the leadership of Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), who also chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.
NEA receives increase in Fiscal Year 2006
Congress has completed the final conference report for the FY 2006 Interior Appropriations
bill, reconciling differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill.
According to Americans for the Arts, funding increases for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are included in this bill.
Prior to applying an across-the-board rescission of 0.476 percent to all programs within the Interior bill, both cultural agencies received increases of $5 million each for next year.
