Tips for Writing an Iowa Arts Council Grant

The Iowa Arts Council is pleased to be able to provide monetary support to artists and arts organizations across the state. What may seem a daunting task, applying for a grant from the Iowa Arts Council isn’t terribly complicated if you follow directions. And of course, Iowa Arts Council staff is available to help answer your questions at any time throughout the process.

And so we begin a series of “Grantwriting How To’s” from the Iowa Arts Council. Every month we’ll share one of our frequently asked questions, plus a tip or idea on making your grant application successful. A whole list of FAQs and grant writing tips are available on the Iowa Arts Council Web site.

April FAQ:

Not sure which grant program fits your project? Think about the focus of your activity or project. Does it have an education component, either for school children or community members? Is it bringing a traditional art form to new audiences? Is it about creating a new public art work or sponsoring an arts-related conference or workshop?

Look carefully through the available programs on the Iowa Arts Council Funding Overview page to find the program that fits best for you. Remember, the IAC only funds arts-related projects and activities.

April Tip:

Write your narrative as if the reviewers don’t know you, your staff, your history, or what you do. You’ll probably be right.
