Description of position: Assisting Museum Theater Program and Director of Special Projects - No specific major – as long as there is an interest in theater and the arts or working in communications, history, education, and business. Good computer skills. Need help with office work, invoicing, marketing and design work, phone calls for sales and marketing, helping with groups during programs and events, writing small grants, and thank you cards and donation letters, helping organize events, delivering promotional materials, selecting and scheduling shows and workshops, writing press releases, presenting workshops, attending meetings.

Description of position: Iowa Great Places Marketing and Development Intern-
Under the direction of the Iowa Great Places Coordinator, the Marketing and Development Intern works on a strategic plan for the marketing of current Iowa Great Places. The marketing and development intern will work with the communities to research and develop content for publication. He or she will work with the tourism department to ensure the places are properly promoted for tours, conferences, and group travel and develop creative ideas to work with state and local governments to promote Iowa’s Great Places as places to play for a day or stay for a lifetime. Pending legislative approval, we will be increasing the number of Great Places. If this occurs, the marketing and development intern will work to assist the Great Places coordinator and the Great Places Advisory Board in creating a plan to promote the program to the state.
Iowa Great Places works with all state government agencies to spur creative and cultural development in all regions across Iowa. This opportunity will provide an intern with experience in strategic campaign development and implementation, collaboration with local, state and federal organizations, and statewide communications. An intern with Great Places must have a “can-do” attitude, remain flexible and be open to new challenges as they arise.
Requirements:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Must be well-organized and able to work independently.
- Working towards completing a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, English, Journalism or other-related field.
- Must be able to accurately input information into the database and run reports to capture relevant information as requested.
- Proven success with previous positions held.
- Must be trustworthy.
- Proficient with computer software. Experience with design software a plus. Web design ability a plus.
- Should be willing to travel and promote the State of Iowa.

1) Public Relations Intern - Main duties include assistance in the following areas: updating media contact lists, maintaining news clipping database, writing news releases, coordinating special events, updating calendars of events, contributing department newsletter contents and taking photographs. Intern will work as part of 3 member marketing/public relations/web design team. Flexible schedule. Must have own transportation. Knowledge of design programs Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop a plus.
2) Graphic Design Intern - Main duties will include designing flyers, brochures and signage for exhibit openings, events and educational programs. Other duties may include assisting with Web site design and production. Intern will work as part of 3 member marketing/public relations/web design team. Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop required. Web design skills and knowledge of print production and e-communications are helpful, but not required. Experience with Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress preferred. Flexible schedule.
3) Web Development Intern - Main duties include inserting content into web page templates for new SHSI website, hand coding HTML updates to various existing site pages, preparing graphics for the web, and testing pages in various browsers. Knowledge of Macromedia Dreamweaver, HTML, and Adobe Photoshop required. Graphic design skills and knowledge of computer networks and e-communications are helpful, but not required. Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Flash also preferred. Intern will work as part of 3 member marketing/public relations/web design team.

Description of position: Membership and Marketing Intern - Under the direction of the Director, the Membership and Marketing Intern implements the overall plan to reach the goals for the membership program of the State Historical Society of Iowa by coordinating all member communications and activities.
Research and develop a membership marketing plan to grow and retain members.
Create and design marketing/communication pieces including a membership brochure, direct mail solicitations, thank you letters, reminder letters, etc.
Develop creative ideas to promote and sell memberships throughout the State of Iowa.
Data entry of membership sales with a priority to input accurate updated information and generate reports. Basic software training for Raiser’s Edge will be provided.
The Intern must have a “can-do” attitude, remain flexible and be open to new challenges as they arise.

Description of position: Historic Preservation Intern Researcher - The State Historic Preservation Office has a new project to survey surviving movie theaters across the state. An intern researcher is needed to assist with the Fridley Theaters archives, photocopy documents relevant to the project, digitally scan historic and contemporary photographs of theaters and organize research. An interest in and passion for architecture and movie theaters is helpful. A detailed, organized, reliable person is necessary. Training provided. 8-10 hours a week. Paula Mohr, SHPO, Supervisor.
