Call for Entries: Literature & film

8th Annual Wild Rose Independent Film Festival
Nov. 4-7, 2010
AriesWorks Entertainment announces the Call for Entries for the 8th Annual Wild Rose Independent Film Festival, the longest continuously running, fastest growing international film festival in Iowa. Established filmmakers worldwide are invited to send their best features, shorts, documentaries and animated work to compete for prestigious screening slots and the WRIFF’s many awards in multiple categories including: cinematography, writing, design, editing, acting, directing and many others. The Wild Rose Independent Film Festival will be held November 4-7, 2010 at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. www.ariesworks.com

NEW! Grants for Science-Themed Screenplays
Deadline: Sept. 24
Grants of up to $20,000 plus a $5,000 stipend will be awarded to emerging or established screenwriters in the early stages of a science or technology-themed (fiction) narrative screenplay. Projects must have science or technology as a major theme or scientists as major characters. Science fiction or projects that stray too far from basic scientific reality will not be considered. Projects must be narrative (fiction) features and not documentary in nature. Projects must be live action. http://www.sundance.org/sloan/

Call for Entries: Festivals & Events

Craftboston Spring and Craftboston Holiday
Deadline: Sept. 14
Craftboston Spring and Craftboston Holiday are New England’s premiere exhibitions and sales of contemporary craft. Both shows showcase one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces in baskets, ceramics, decorative fiber, wearables, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper and wood. Craftboston Spring features 200 artists and is held at the Seaport World Trade Center on Boston’s historic waterfront. Show dates are March 25-27, 2011 with preview on March 24. Craftboston Holiday includes 90 artists and is held at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts. The Cyclorama is located in the heart of Boston’s Historic South End, an area known for its rich cultural arts events, galleries and organizations. Show dates are December 9-11, 2011 with preview on December 8. Craftboston is produced by The Society of Arts and Crafts. Incorporated in 1897, SAC has been at the forefront of the American craft movement fostering the development, sales, recognition and education of craft for over 100 years. Call for Entries: Theatre & Music

NEW! Auditions for The Nutcracker Ballet
Sept. 12
The Iowa State Center’s 30th anniversary of the time-honored Nutcracker Ballet is fast approaching. Auditions for this year’s production are scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2010 from noon-7 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium, Ames. To participate in this year’s Nutcracker Ballet, all dancers must be at least six years old by the audition date. Audition registration begins at 11:15 a.m. Please arrive early to complete the proper paperwork prior to audition times. All dancers should wear leotards, tights, and ballet or pointe shoes. Please be dressed, warmed-up and ready to audition The Nutcracker Ballet has become an annual holiday tradition for many families. The production showcases sensational talent for three shows, December 10-12, 2010. More than 300 local performers from local dance studios bring this whimsical fairy-tale plot to life. Call for Entries: Exhibitions & Other Visual Art

Arrowhead Biennial Exhibition
Deadline: Aug. 20
Open to artists residing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan and Ontario, Canada. $25 entry fee for up to three JPG images; no more than two entry forms per artist; total of six artworks or six total images (three per entry form). NEW! Grant Wood Scenic Byway Landscape Show
Deadline: Aug. 22
Exhibit will be on display from Aug. 23-Sept. 19th in the spacious galleries of Maquoketa Art Experience on Main St. in downtown Maquoketa. Any and all artists are invited to tour and paint along the Byway from Stone City, the home of Grant Wood’s summer art colony, through Anamosa, Maquoketa, the Maquoketa Caves, through Andrew, then Springbrook, and on to the beautiful Mississippi River views at Bellevue. Paintings depicting scenes along and near the Byway can be brought to Maquoketa Art Experience at the close of Ellen Wagener’s landscape workshop, from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 22.  Artists, who cannot deliver their works at that time, can call MAE at (563) 652-9925 to make arrangements for delivery prior to that time. Owners of original paintings that show scenes from and near the Byway can also place those works on display. The paintings and drawings that are brought in for the exhibition do not have to be for sale, but a sales price can be listed if the artist so chooses. Maquoketa Art Experience will take a 25% commission on any sales. Only original paintings and drawing will be accepted. No photography and no prints/reproductions will be accepted for the show. www.maquoketa-art.org

NEW! Studio Visit Competition
Deadline: Aug. 31
Studio Visit is a series of juried artist books produced by the publishers of New American Paintings. The publication presents all two- and three- dimensional media. Selected artists will be featured in volumes 13 & 14 of Studio Visit. Each high quality volume of Studio Visit features approximately 150 artists, who have been selected by professional curators. Selected artists will be given one full-color page that includes an image, contact information and a brief artist statement. Studio Visit will be received by two thousand carefully selected curators and gallerists throughout the country as well as a growing subscriber base of collectors and art enthusiasts. Because Studio Visit is sent to its recipients free of charge, accepted artists will be responsible for a $225 production and distribution fee. www.studiovisitmagazine.com

The Sampson Hoffland Science Laboratories Atrium Project Call for Artists
Deadline: Sept. 1
Luther College invites professionals with experience in site-specific design to submit conceptual design proposals for artwork that transforms the atrium of the Sampson Hoffland Science Laboratories at Luther College. Artwork that incorporates the scientific focus of the building, either from a broader scientific approach or more specific to the content of the building (biology and chemistry) is encouraged. Artists may submit proposals for one or both atrium walls. Luther College has designated $15,000 to cover total costs of both projects. At the conclusion of the process, all materials developed by the artist/designer will become the exclusive property of Luther College. NEW! Prairie Festvial: A Celebration of Art, Music and Land
Deadline: Sept. 10
The Center for Prairie Studies invites submissions of photographs with a prairie theme to display at the “Prairie Festival: A Celebration of Art, Music, and Land” event at the Grinnell College Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA), Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. Photographers may submit one 8x10 print. Subject matter may include, but is not limited to, wildlife, plants, prairie or savanna landscapes, people immersed in prairie, and photos of art installations with prairie materials. Photographs, which may be landscape or portrait-oriented, will be matted by Center for Prairie Studies staff in preparation for display. Prairie Festival visitors will vote for their favorite photos. The top votes will receive Grinnell chamber bucks, $50 for first place, $30 for second place, and $20 for third. Winners will be announced at the Prairie Festival at CERA on September 18 at 4:30 pm. Submissions should include the 8x10 print, along with your name, address, phone number, and a brief description of the photo content and where the photo was taken. The deadline for submission is September 10. Submissions may be mailed to or dropped off at the Center for Prairie Studies, 1205 Park St, Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA 50112. National Photography ’10 Juried Exhibition
Deadline: Sept. 18
Photographers residing in the U.S. and who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to submit digital images for consideration. Entry fee, $30/2 pieces of artwork. Jurors are Keith Millman, associate professor and department chair of new media at Tompkins Cortland Community College; and Roger Smith, painter, sculptor, educator and co-director of the Main Street Gallery in Groton, NY. Weekend Workshop with Landscape Artist Ellen Wagner
Aug. 20-22, 2010; Maquoketa
This summer workshop is the third of four seasonal workshops focusing on the natural resources and beauty of Eastern Iowa. Maquoketa Art Experience will host a three-day summer landscape workshop with Ellen Wagener that is geared to both beginning artists and “seasoned masters.”  The workshop will cover working processes including photography, sketching, idea-generation, compositions, and color palettes. Special emphasis will be given to pastel technique in the creation of cloudscapes. Weekend Workshop with Landscape Artist Terri Ford
Oct. 8-10, 2010; Maquoketa
This summer workshop is the fourth of four seasonal workshops focusing on the natural resources and beauty of Eastern Iowa. Maquoketa Art Experience will host a three-day autumn landscape workshop with pastel painter Terri Ford. Participants will experience the orderly rows of pristine farmlands and hills that inspired Grant Wood’s landscapes and the birthplace of Regionalist art. Sloan Producers Grant

Film Independent’s Producers Lab Accepting Applications for Sloan Producers Grant
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards the annual Sloan Producers Grant to one participant of Film Independent’s Producers Lab. The recipient receives a $25,000 development grant, admission to the Producers Lab, and year-round support from Film Independent. The grant is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation as part of its effort to create and develop new scripts and films about science and technology and to see them into commercial production with national and international distribution.
