Hardacre Film & Cinema Film Festival
Deadline: June 1
The Hardacre Film & Cinema Film Festival will be held Aug. 1-2 in Tipton. Feature films, short films and student films will be accepted. Entry fees are dependent upon a film’s length. All Roads Film Project
Deadline: June 15, Sept. 15, Dec. 15
The All Roads Film Project is a National Geographic initiative created to provide an international platform for indigenous and underrepresented minority culture artists to share their cultures, stories and perspectives through the power of film and photography. Literary Gift of Freedom Award
Deadline: Oct. 31
A Room of Her Own Foundation is dedicated to helping women artists achieve the privacy and financial support necessary to pursue their art. Toward this end, the foundation annually provides an award of $50,000 to a woman writer. The Foundation’s 2009 Literary Gift of Freedom Award will be given to an American woman writer who is a U.S. citizen and will be living in the U.S. during the grant period. Seeking sewing, quilting or embroidery guilds to participate in the Original Creative Festival May 29-30 in Council Bluffs. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Guilds will be provided a complimentary booth space with one 8-ft. undraped table and two chairs. “Art in the Park” is part of “Race Days,” an annual summer festival and family-friendly event in the southern Minnesota town of Jackson. Seeking skilled vendors to share arts and crafts for retail business or promotional/exhibit space. Price is $20 for 12’ x 12’ grass space. Two photos of work must accompany application. Juried, outdoor arts festival show and sale sponsored by the Amana Arts Guild. Event will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in Middle Amana Park. Includes food sales, performing arts, children’s activities. Artist demonstrations are encouraged. NEW! 12th Annual Art-A-Fair
Deadline: June 20
The Des Moines Women’s Club seeks artists for the12th Annual Art-A-Fair Sunday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lawn at Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines. Artist work is juried by a screening committee who will determine eligibility based upon submitted photos. Categories of exhibited work in previous shows include oil, acrylic, watercolor, jewelry, fiber, pottery, graphic arts, glass, metal, wood, print-making, photography, sculpture, paper and mixed media. Work will be judged on originality, excellence, design and creativity. Only artists displaying their own original work will be eligible to participate. Prints of the artist’s work are acceptable. 30th Annual College Hill Arts Festival
July 18-19
Applications are now available for the College Hill Arts Festival scheduled for July 18-19, 2008 on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. This juried event showcases the works of 75 artists and was named to Sunshine Artists Magazine’s 2007 list of ‘100 Best Fine Art & Design Shows” in the U.S. The Festival was also named 2006 Event of the Year by the Cedar Valley Tourism Bureau. Call for Historic Crafts from the Late 1800s
The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch seeks historical crafters for Hooverfest, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Crafters will demonstrate and interact with visitors. Mount Vernon’s 3rd Annual Lincoln Highway Arts Festival is now accepting artist’s applications. This is a vibrant and well-publicized fine art festival in a charming and historic setting. Other highlights include children’s activities, food vendors, and live music. The festival is not juried, but participation is limited to original fine art. NEW! 4Culture Call for Entries
Deadline: May 5
4Culture seeks wall-mounted landscape works that use color (paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, etc.) for the Harborview Medical Center Collection in Seattle, Wash. The subject matter must be the essence of landscape, whether represented realistically or abstractly. These works will be on display throughout the public spaces of a new multi-story facility that houses operating rooms, acute care, rehabilitation, and clinic facilities, along with their associated waiting areas. An overall budget of $80,000 has been designated to purchase artwork. Artists who would like their work considered for purchase must submit images of existing available artwork for the panel’s review. The maximum value of individual works should be $3,500. A maximum height or width of 36” and a maximum depth of 3” for the artwork is specified. All artworks will be purchased unframed. For a complete prospectus, visit www.4culture.org.
GLBT Artists Who Live & Work in Iowa
CSPS in Cedar Rapids will host a juried exhibit of gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender artists who live and work in Iowa. Artists in this category who work in any visual arts genre and would like to be considered for inclusion should send an inquiry, resume and/or work sample to info@legionarts.org. 2008 Photo Review Photography Competition
Deadline: May 15
The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 24th annual photography competition. Accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people across the world in The Photo Review’s 2008 competition issue and on its Web site. Prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Awards include a Microtek ArtixScan M1 Dual Media Scanner ($650), a copy of SilverFast HDR Studio digital camera RAW conversion software from LaserSoft Imaging ($499), a Lensbaby 3G Lens and Wide Angle / Telephoto kit ($359), camera bags from Lowepro ($200 and $100), a $250 gift certificate from Calumet Photographic, two $50 gift certificates from Sprint Systems, and $250 in cash prizes. An entry fee of $30 for up to three prints, slides, or images on CD and $5 each for up to two additional images entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. Garden Art Fair

Reiman Gardens in Ames will hold its 6th Annual Garden Art Fair Sunday, July 13 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Organizers are seeking artists to share garden or nature-inspired art with the public through sales and display in a beautiful garden setting (indoor and outdoor booths available). Go Green Installation

The Main Street Gallery in Groton, N.Y., seeks submissions for a large scale installation on the environment. The exhibition, “Go Green,” will take place June 12-July 20. Artists and the general public can participate by sending in handwritten or typed words in any language about the environment. Drawings or photographs can be part of the work. No painting will be accepted. Please put your name and location in the lower right hand corner of your submission. The handling fee is 410. The work will not be returned. Horizontal Grandeur Juried Art Exhibition

The Stevens County Historical Society in Morris, Minn., seeks entries for Horizontal Grandeur juried art exhibition July 11-Oct. 31, 2008. Open to all artists residing in states that have a prairie. Paint the Parks: Celebrating America’s National Parks

The 2008 Paint the Parks100 Competition and the Paint the Parks “Mini50”
provide the country’s top national venue for established and emerging representational artists to showcase their talents. The competition celebrates our country’s national parks, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the National Parks Foundation (www.nationalparks.org) The competition also supports the PaintAmerica mission of providing scholarships for young artists and promoting the visual arts across America. Entries representing any of the 390 National Parks are submitted and judged within one of the three National Park Regions. The highest scoring painting from all entries is named the Grand Prize Purchase Award Winner and claims a $10,000 purchase award. It, and the top 33 paintings from each of the three regions advance to the Paint the Parks100. Other artists in the top 100 also have the chance to receive additional cash prizes and purchase awards. 28th Annual Nat’l Juried Fine Art Competition

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, Ga., is currently accepting entries for its 28th annual juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place 2008. Open to all U.S. artists ages 18 and older working in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. $25 entry fee covers submission of slides or CD of up to three works; additional works $5 each. NEW! VSA Arts “Green Light” National Juried Exhition
Deadline: July 11
Open to emerging artists, ages 16-25 with disabilities. This year’s theme, “Green Light,” challenges artists to pinpoint the motivation behind their work and the infinite possibilities that creativity provides. Art must be an original work that has been completed in the last three (3) years. Eligible media include: paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil or charcoal), fine art prints (lithographs, etching, intaglio, or woodcuts), photography, computer generated prints and two-dimensional mixed media. Virtually any media that may be represented in two-dimensions. Artwork should not exceed 60 inches in either direction. NEW THIS YEAR: Sculpture and time-based media (video, film etc.) will also be considered. Sculpture should not exceed 24 inches in any direction. Fifteen (15) finalists will be awarded a total of $60,000 in cash awards that is distributed as follows: $20,000 grand prize, $10,000 first award, $6,000 second award, and 12 awards of excellence in the amount of $2,000. Finalists will be honored at an awards ceremony on Capitol Hill during the Fall of 2008, and their artwork will be displayed in a nation-wide touring exhibition that debuts at the Smithsonian during September 2008. Rose Frantzen Oil Painting Workshop

Five-day intensive workshop with a focus on portrait painting in oil with a model; all aspects of portrait painting, from palette choices to drawing to seeing and capturing the colors and forms seen in the model will be covered. Reiman Gardens, located at Iowa State University, is opening a new gift shop this summer and would like to offer products created by local artists. This new gift shop will reflect the Gardens' new mission of stewardship and sustainability. Products should reflect this mission and be inspired by the garden. This may include items made with recycled materials, or use of natural and organic materials. Products can also highlight current collections including roses, butterflies, plants and insects.
