Iowa Arts Council Advisory Panel Profile Form
The Iowa Arts Council utilizes advisory panels to review applications submitted to our various programs and to obtain citizen input to our programs, services, and our long-range planning process.
Panelist's advice is central to government support of the arts. We rely on individuals reflecting a full range of artistic and cultural viewpoints and wide geographic, gender and ethnic diversity to bring a broad spectrum of knowledge to application review and policy discussions.
Our panels are composed of arts experts (persons who are qualified by their training, skill or experience in an art form) and knowledgeable laypersons (persons who are knowledgeable about the arts but who are not engaged in the arts as a profession). Panelists volunteer their time to attend meetings and are reimbursed for their expenses to attend panel meetings. Most meetings are held during the week in Des Moines at the State Historical Building.
Characteristics of a good panelist:
- Have a strong interest in and knowledge of the arts (for the particular panel) and be willing to listen to other points of view.
- Review applications according to the published program guidelines, policies, funding priorities, and review criteria.
- Complete all panel assignments prior to the meeting.
- Arrive on time and stay throughout the meeting.
- Be an active participant, but doesn't dominate meetings.
