NEW! Ankeny Arts Center Emerging Artists Exhibition
May 1-June 14
Ankeny Art Center presents the works of two emerging Iowa artists in May. Ben Shuh’s exhibit, “Emotion,” and Van Holmgren’s show “Bare Medium” will be on display May 1– June 14 in the Main Gallery. Shuh’s work includes mixed subject matter, with every work relating to emotion. The opening reception for Shuh is Saturday, May 3 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ankeny Art Center. Public and media are invited to meet the artist and enjoy hors d’ oeuvres and wine. Holmgren describes his canvas as “discarded lumber that you may have thrown in the trash.” Holmgren’s reception will be Saturday, May 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ankeny Art Center. NEW! CASA Annual Gallery Show: Growth
Opens May 2
Creative Artists’ Studios of Ames (CASA) will open its Annual Gallery Show: Growth May 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. An art sale, pit firing demo and raku demo will be Sunday from 12-4 p.m. The show will feature a variety of mediums and styles from amateur to professional. 17th Annual Exhibit of Young Artists
Through May 2, Joan Kuyper Farver Gallery, Pella
This exhibit displays some of the imaginative and creative artworks that students from Pella Community Schools, Pella Christian Schools and the Art Center Programs at the Pella Community Center have produced this year. When roaming through the gallery, one will find photograms, ink prints, glue, oil pastels, tempera paints, clay, construction paper, wood scraps, and used yogurt containers helping to transform the imaginative creations of each young artist into vibrant and colorful masterpieces. NEW! Art Andes Celebration
May 3, Blanden Memorial Art Museum, Fort Dodge
Surround yourself with rich textiles from Peru – hand-spun yarns, hand-dyed organic color and intricate pre-Columbian patterns based on ancient Incan agrarian mythologies. For one day the Blanden Art Museum’s East Gallery will be transformed with rugs, wall hangings, table runners and other hand-woven textiles from the Ayacucho region of Peru. Wilbur Quispe, master weaver from Peru, will demonstrate weaving techniques. Event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with refreshments and music. Free and open to the public. Unexpected Company will present concert performances of “Hearts of Freedom,” an original musical by Iowa artists Brian R. Lynner and Lisa Norris Friday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 1, at 3 p.m. in the Kruidenier Auditorium at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines. An additional performance will be held Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue in Des Moines. All performances are free to the public with free will donations accepted.
