According to a recent survey, most people in the U.S. feel that artists have a positive impact on their lives. Nearly 64% of Americans believe that artists help the local economy. More than 63% think that artists are helpful in bringing diverse groups together. About 67% feel that artists make it easier to see life differently, and 71% believe that artists have made their area a better place to live.

The results, though not necessarily surprising, show the value artists play as cultural entrepreneurs in the creative economy, something cited amongst the goals of Imagine Iowa 2010: A Cultural Vision, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs’ initiative.

The 2002 American Perceptions of Artists Survey, sponsored by the Urban Institute and conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, was a benchmark study of the general public's opinions about the lifestyles and work of artists in the United States.

The purpose of the study was to examine public perceptions of artists from several angles, including general interest in news or current events related to artists; awareness of different arts disciplines; artists' contributions to society and their local communities; personal work as an artist and interaction with artists.

More than 31% of the population think artists contribute "a lot" to the general good of society, while fewer than 10% of Americans believe artists contribute "nothing" to society.

Compared to other occupations, artists are seen as contributing less than teachers, doctors, scientists, construction workers and religious leaders. The perceived societal contribution of artists is more similar to that of elected officials and athletes.

Beyond contributing to the general welfare of society, artists are viewed as enhancing the personal life experience of many individuals.

The majority of American adults say that they have been moved or inspired by art. More than 80% of people report having been inspired by hearing a piece of music, watching a movie or video, or viewing a work of visual art.

Perhaps this is why many Americans regularly seek out new artistic experiences. More than 70% of Americans actively look for new work by musicians, 67% look for new work by writers, 58% look for new work by filmmakers and 43% look for new work by visual artists.
