IAC marks Youth Art Month in March

Art Educators of Iowa put statewide youth art on display

(DES MOINES, Iowa) — The winning entries in a statewide art competition involving Iowa students will be on display March 1-31, 2009, at the State Historical Building in Des Moines as part of Youth Art Month in Iowa.

Sponsored for the 19th year by Art Educators of Iowa with support from the Iowa Arts Council, the competition showcases works by Iowa students in grades K-12. The State Historical Building will feature 130 of the entries while 15 “best of show” entries will be displayed in the office of Governor Chet Culver.

The State Historical Building is at 600 E. Locust Street in Des Moines. Hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public. Visit www.iowahistory.org for more information.

“We are very pleased to partner with Art Educators of Iowa again this year to celebrate Youth Art Month in Iowa,” Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director Cyndi Pederson said. “This celebration helps bring attention to the value of art education in developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, community awareness and technical, communication and expressive skills.”

Art Educators of Iowa will kick off the celebration of Youth Art Month at noon, Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at the State Historical Building with “Let the Magic Begin,” a celebration for the young artists. Thirteen-year-old magician Michael Osmon of Des Moines will perform. Family and friends are invited to the celebration.

The event will coincide with recognition for the winners of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running, largest and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts.

Following is a list of young artists whose work will be on exhibit. Names with an asterisk denote students who will have their work displayed in the governor’s office.
