Iowa State University's "Museum Without Walls".   ISU's public art collection contains more than 200 major works of art. The collection began in the 1930s when Grant Wood designed murals for the college library. Artist-in-resident, sculptor Christian Petersen created 12 large public sculptures for the campus from 1934 to 1955, and since enactment of Iowa's Art in State Building Program, ISU has added many more works of art. A Guild to the Art on Campus Collection, including a self-guided walking tour, is available for $1.00 through the University Museums office.

Bemis Center for Contemporary Art is an internationally-recognized art organization founded by artists in 1981 and dedicated to the support of a wide variety of artistic research. This is accomplished by providing long term residencies, monthly stipends, and abundant work space to artists from all over the world. Through an exhibition program, off-site installations and community lectures, the Bemis provides a forum for experimentation and exploration of new ideas. Programs are housed in two urban warehouses and half block of open urban property. Art 4 Omaha, a public art initiative, is designed to bring the best in contemporary art directly to the public. The Bemis Underground curatorial residency program offers curators in the region the opportunity to present projects in the basement level gallery.

In 1992, Legion Arts opened CSPS, a contemporary arts center located in a renovated, Czech social hall near downtown Cedar Rapids. Since then CSPS has become an outstanding regional venue for art, music, dance and theatre from across the US and other countries. In addition to CSPS, Legion Arts exhibits and arts events take place at the Osada apartment complex and other community locations. Neighborhood Arts Project: Through as series of local partnerships, Legion Arts is bringing artists and community groups together to address common concerns in innovative ways. Eventually many of these activities will be based at the Paul Engle Center for Neighborhood Arts, located in a renovated corner grocery, and the result of a partnership between Legion Arts, MidAmerica Housing Partnership, and the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association. The Paul Engle Center is set to open in late 1999 or early 2000. Tractor: Legion Arts encourages the imaginative exploration of contemporary ideas and experience through discussions, lectures, publications and conferences. These activities include a series of Common Ground artists conferences during the 1990s, as well as Tractor, a quarterly magazine of Iowa arts and culture that provides news, commentary and reviews from across the state.

Elements, Ltd. is a gallery featuring designer jewelry, fine metal art, and other treasures. Our artists work in a variety of techniques, styles and materials covering a broad range of contemporary design. This 1901 structure was built as a fire station, later became the city hall and police station, and now is an art gallery. Nationally-known artist Rose Frantzen, who has been featured in American Artist, Southwest Art, and Art Talk magazines, has original oil paintings on display. Portrait, landscape and still-life works shown are changed frequently as the works are sold all over the country. The artist is a Maquoketa, Iowa native and has a studio on the second floor. The gallery located on the main floor has an annual opening show of the artist's new works. Sculpture, scenic photography, and pottery along with paintings are shown throughout the year. This gallery was the recipient of the 2001 Tourism and the Arts Award from Iowa Group Travel and the Iowa Division of Tourism.
