Fiscal Year 2010 / Mini Grants: October

 

The Iowa Arts Council received 22 eligible Mini grant applications for the October round. Applicants requested a total of $27,907 for Arts projects. Six projects were funded totaling $7225. There is a possible total score of 44 points. Although a score of 33 or above would be considered fundable, available funding did not allow for grants scoring below 39.33, leaving eight additional worthwhile projects unfunded. With $9,687 in additional funding those eight applicants could have been funded.

Heather Derr-Smith, West Des Moines
Bosnia Poetry Workshops and Readings

Iowa Poet Heather Derr-Smith will use IAC grant funds to lead poetry workshops and give readings at the International University of Sarajevo, Sarajevo Institute of Science and Technology, Burch International University, University of Tuzla, University of Zenica, and University of Travnik and give three additional poetry readings in Sarajevo at Buy Book, American Corner, and the British Council. November 20th-26th, 2009

From Main Street: Music and Sound in Portrait of Maquoketa

From November 6, 2009 through July 5, 2010  the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery will exhibit Portrait of Maquoketa, a multi-media interdisciplinary art installation in paint and sound by artist Rose Frantzen and composer John Frantzen. These IAC Grant funds will support recording and musician expenses for a November 7, 2009 live performance seminar highlighting music and sound from Portrait of Maquoketa.

Karin Stein, Kellogg
Study of "gaita" and "cana de millo" flutes in Colombia

IAC grant funds will allow Colombian musician Karin Stein to return to her home country in February of 2010 to study the "gaita" and "cana de millo" flutes, and to video tape the percussion and dance techniques that accompany the playing of these flutes.  Knowledge gathered will significantly expand the repertoire of her ensembles.

Bell Tower Productions, Dubuque
Redesign of www.belltowertheater.net

IAC grant funds will help support the redesign of  www.belltowertheater.net, the website for Bell Tower Productions, to better serve all of their constituents. The new site will include information on all Bell Tower Theater programs and events as well as secure on-line ticket sales and class registrations.

University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls
Vertigo-A-Go-Go: A Night of Performance with Ruins of Ooah

IAC grant funds will allow the music trio, Ruins of Ooah, to collaborate with the University of Northern Iowa during a 5-day residency, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, to present the 13th annual public exhibition, "Vertigo-A-Go-Go: A Night of Performance Art," including a KUNI artist interview and performance as well as community musical and performance art events.

Bosnian Cultural Foundation, Waterloo
KUD Kolo Costuming and Choreography for Resettlement Anniversary Concert

This IAC grant funding will assist in purchasing updated new costumes and choreographies for KUD Kolo, the youth folkdance ensemble associated with the Bosnian Cultural Foundation.  The ensemble will use these necessary items for upcoming events, including a concert commemorating the 15th anniversary of Bosnian settlement in the Cedar Valley.
