Fiscal Year 2009 / Mini Grants: November
The Iowa Arts Council received 17 eligible Mini grant applications for the November round. Applicants requested a total of $24,567 for Arts projects. Seven projects were funded totaling $9,567 There is a possible total score of 44 points. Although a score of 33 or above would be considered fundable, available funding did not allow for grants scoring below 34.67, leaving many worthwhile projects unfunded.
Margaret Stratton, Iowa City
The Living and the Dead: Resurrecting The Neapolitan Cult of the Skull

Photographer Margaret Stratton will use IAC grant funds for the publication of "The Living and the Dead: Resurrecting the Neapolitan Cult of the Skull", a hard cover publication with eighty plates of her photographs of Naples, Italy. The prestigious Center for American Places, Colombia College, Chicago, and The University of Chicago Press will publish the monograph, under both photography and religion.
Margaret LaBounty, Council Bluffs
Exhibition at World Art Vision: Cancun 2008

Margaret LaBounty has been invited to participate at World Art Vision: Cancun 2008. IAC grant funding allows her to join internationally recognized artists Arturo Garc, Bustos and Arturo Estrada, and Rina Lazlo, pupil and collaborator of Diego Rivera. A multi faceted artist, LaBounty has chosen to exhibit paintings in acrylic.
Shawn Womack, Grinnell
Decade Dances

DECADE DANCES is a retrospective of Iowa choreographer Shawn Womack's work and it addresses matters of ageism, woman and dance. IAC funding supports performances in January 2009 at Grinnell College, the Mitchellville women's prison and a Grinnell retirement community. Collaborators: Deborah Breuleux, Shellie Cash, Renee McCafferty (dancers), Erin Howell Gritsch (costumes), Justin Thomas (lighting).
Karen Bourne, Sioux City
World Music Drumming Summer Training

IAC Funding will allow Mrs. Karen Bourne will attend Level II training for World Music Drumming in Oconomowoc, WI June 21-26, 2009. She will implement the techniques and skills learned in her private piano studio and her public school classroom. Mrs. Bourne will share her learning with the Sioux City Schools Music Staff.
Iowa Alliance for Arts Education, Davenport
IAAE Identity Development Program

ICA funds will be used to improve the quality of IAAE's communication with Iowa's community of arts educators and stakeholders. The marketing materials developed with this funding will make IAAE's resource offerings more accessible to the arts education community including professional development opportunities, issue updates, and coordination among arts organizations.
The Englert Civic Theatre, Inc., Iowa City
Live Musicians for "The Nutcracker" Community Collaboration

Funding will support hiring 28 regional musicians to play in the orchestra for a fully-staged rendition of "The Nutcracker," a community collaboration at The Englert Theatre in December 2008. The orchestra will be conducted by Carey Bostian, a member of the IAC Artist Roster.
Greater Ottumwa Vocal Arts Project, Ottumwa
GOVAP's Participation in Paulus' Oratorio, "To Be Certain of the Dawn"

IAC Funding supports the Greater Ottumwa Vocal Arts Project Children's Chorus for their participation in the Iowa premiere of Paulus' "To Be Certain of the Dawn", celebrating Jewish history, alongside Iowa Wesleyan College and the Southeast Iowa Symphony in February's Burlington and Ottumwa concerts. They will collaborate with other groups and perform new repertoire under a different director.
