Fiscal Year 2008 / Mini Grants: October

The Iowa Arts Council received 11 eligible Mini grant applications for the October round. We received a total of$14,200 in requested funds. Of those, 6 were selected for funding, totaling $9,000. Out of a possible score of 44, the highest score of those selected for funding was 42.67 the lowest at 34.33

ArtSpace Building Feasibility Consultation, Des Moines
The Drama Workshop, $1,500
The Drama Workshop will hire ArtSpace, a Minneapolis-based real estate developer, for a two-day consultation to assist with feasibility studies and negotiations for creating a multidisciplinary cultural arts center in Des Moines that will provide rehearsal, performance, office and live/work space for arts organizations and individual artists.

Russian Halloween, Iowa City
International Academy for Russian Music, Arts and Culture (IARMAC), $1,500
Grant funds support the world premiere of Angelo Gilardino’s “Concerto de Novgorod” (2006) for Russian guitar and chamber orchestra. This is the first composition for this instrument by a non-Russian composer. The concert includes references to ancient Slavic celebrations related to Halloween. Crescendo’s Children’s Choir will also participate by performing Russian ritual songs.

Stations of Her Undoing, Iowa City
Emily Barwick, $1,500
Emily Barwick’s exhibit, “Stations of Her Undoing,” is a 14-piece exhibition that calls attention to the various abuses women suffer within our society. It brings to light many important issues in women’s lives. This show will take place at the ARC Gallery in Chicago Nov. 28-Dec. 22.

L&J Recording Project, “Return”
Elizabeth Kennedy, $1,500
This recording, using Iowa musicians supporting the alt-folk duo L&J, is a collection of songs written after L&J’s return to Iowa in 2004. “Return” is an artistic endeavor exploring the emotions and ideas brought by returning home. After recording and pressing the CD, L&J will promote the release to regional audiences with live shows, public radio and promotional events with the support from this grant.

SPT Theatre Company Salon CD, Mechanicsville
SPT Theatre Company, $1,500
Grant funding will allow the SPT Theatre Company to mix, master and reproduce a new CD. The CD will feature company members, will be designed by Iowa graphic artist Cathy Petersen, and will debut at “Salon” 2008, celebrating this successful SPT/Brucemore collaboration.

Christmas at the Orpheum, Sioux City
Briar Cliff University Department of Music, $1,500
Christmas at the Orpheum will take place Dec. 15 and is a collaborative performing arts event featuring the Briar Cliff University Choirs, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska Children’s Chorus “Bel Canto” (Omaha/Council Bluffs), Sioux Center Public Schools, First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir (Sioux City), pianist Richard Steinbach and conductor Sean Burton.
