Fiscal Year 2008 / Mini Grants: November
The Iowa Arts Council received 11 eligible Mini grant applications for the November round. We received a total of $15,975 in requested funds. Of those, 7 were selected for funding, totaling $8,775. Out of a possible score of 44, the highest score of those selected for funding was 42.00 the lowest at 38.
Lakewood Elementary, Norwalk
The Great State History Play, $975
For A culminating activity to our Iowa History Unit, we use grant funding to hire
Fax Gilbert to direct The Great State History Play for our students to perform.
This activity will help students make personal connections through history by participation.
Iowa Scriptwriters Alliance, West Des Moines
Seven Sins, $1,300
Grant funding will allow the Iowa Scriptwriters Alliance to give seven Iowa playwrights
a chance to have their short plays produced, as well as give many other Iowa writers the
opportunity to see the production side of theater. Open to all Iowa playwrights, scripts
will be judged blindly, honed in January, and produced in April.
Larassa Kabel, Des Moines
Peripheral Visions, $1,300
Artist Larassa Kabel will use grant funding for the creation of a new body of work consisting
of eight oil paintings and six charcoal drawings exploring the phenomenon of peripheral vision.
The completed paintings and drawings will be shown in a solo exhibition and then used in a
promotional CD to gain new gallery representation.
Alan Murphy, Iowa City
The Burlington Street Bluegrass Band CD Project, $1,300
The Burlington Street Bluegrass Band is composed of Iowa musicians Mike Finders, Dale Thomas,
Bob Black, Alan Murphy, Joe Peterson and Aleta Murphy. The band will use grant funds to create a
CD of traditional and original music, recording their work for posterity, and to meet demand
from its growing audience.
David Rogers, Coralville
Captain's Verses - Music Project, $1,300
Requested IAC funds will be used to help Captain's Verses, an Iowa folk-rock band, manufacture
and promote their debut album. The release of their album and supporting performances will strengthen
their ties to the Iowa music scene and help spread Iowa music throughout the state.
Musser Public Library, Muscatine
"Portraits of the Prairie" by Home school Group, $1,300
Funding will allow the Eulenspiegel Puppets to instruct home schooled students in the art of puppet-making
and puppetry on December 27 and 28, 2007; and help them present the Eulenspiegel "Portraits of the Prairie" show at Muscatine County Conservation Discovery Park on December 29, 2007. Two free, supplemental puppetry workshops will also be available free of charge for young library patrons.
Graceland University, Lamoni
The Nutcracker Ballet in Lamoni, $1,300
Graceland University will use grant funding to bring in the David Taylor Dance Theatre's production of the holiday favorite "The Nutcracker". This particular production would not only be a crowd pleaser and guarantee a great audience, they also utilize children from surrounding communities to take part the production!
