Fiscal Year 2008 / Mini Grants: March
The Iowa Arts Council received 28 eligible Mini grant applications for the March round. Applicants requested a total of $37,575 for Arts projects. Seven projects were selected for funding, with grant awards totaling $9,313 There is a possible total score of 44 points. Although a score of 33 or above would be considered fundable, available funding did not allow for grants scoring below 33.33, leaving many worthwhile projects unfunded.
Friends of the Sami Center, Spirit Lake
Simon Estes Master Class with Students $1,500
Iowa Arts Council finding will support Iowa-born, international opera star Simon Estes to perform at the Grand Opening of the 1,000-seat Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts in Spirit Lake, IA, on April 12. He will also provide a master class for Spirit Lake vocal music students in grades 7-12 on April 11.
Eric McIntyre, Grinnell
Theatrical Chamber Music and Narrative Improvisation

Iowa Arts Council finding this Iowa Artist Eric McIntyre with a project featuring free recitals of new theatrical chamber music and improvisations in three Iowa venues in May of 2008. Three Iowa musicians, French hornist/composer Eric McIntyre, mezzo-soprano Kimberly Fitch, and pianist Patrice Ewoldt perform these programs that fuse musical performance, storytelling, acting, and improvisation.

Peggy Johnston will use Iowa Arts Council finding to attend Paper and Book Intensive 2008. Paper and Book Intensive is a working sabbatical for practitioners in the book arts, papermaking, and conservation. Daily class sessions, lectures, discussions, and shared meals promote unusual levels of exchange and inspiration. This year PBI will be held at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, TN, May 14-25, 2008.

Partners in Music Education - The Ahn Trio

Iowa Arts Council finding will support the Civic Music Association of Des Moines to present several Partners n Music Education events surrounding a concert featuring the
internationally acclaimed, Ahn Trio. Programs will include an interactive workshop at Merrill Middle School, a master class at Drake University and a post-concert reception co-hosted by the Young Professionals Connection of Des Moines.
Keokuk Art Center, Keokuk
Switchback School Program & Community Concert

Funded by the Iowa Arts Council, on April 22, 23 and 24, the Keokuk Art Center will sponsor a series of events by musicians, Brian FitzGerald and Marty McCormack. The duo, known as Switchback, will introduce traditional Irish music to students within Keokuk's elementary schools during the three days and then present a concert performance to the community at large on Thursday evening.

Songs of Hope Concert

Iowa Arts Council finding will bring Songs of Hope to residents and visitors of Marquette and from neighboring cities in July 2008. Songs of Hope is a nationally recognized touring company of youth performers from countries worldwide, backed by an ensemble of professional musicians from Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
