Fiscal Year 2008 / Mini Grants: August

The Iowa Arts Council received 20 eligible Mini grant applications for the August round. We received a total of $28,467 in requested funds. Of those, 7 were selected for funding, totaling $9250 Out of a possible score of 44, the highest score of those selected for funding was 37.33 the lowest at 33.33.

Studio at Hidden Acres Ranch, Coon Rapids
Stained Glass Panel - Raccoon River Vista

Funding will allow Artists to design and fabricate a 3 by 5 foot stained glass panel depicting the Middle Raccoon River as it flows through Coon Rapids. It will be framed in walnut by a local woodworker and hung in a prominent place in the Coon Rapids Library.

Karla Goettel, Cedar Rapids
"Just Great Songs"--CD recording by Karla Goettel, soprano

With IAC grant suppor, Karla Goettel will record a CD of her eclectic program, "Just Great Songs." She is in the process of organizing musical arrangers, professional musicians and a recording producer. Recording is scheduled to begin shortly after September 1 and completion of the project is scheduled for mid-November.

IAC grant funding will allow the artist to frame a new series of digital prints entitled COMBINES. It will be on display at the Corning Center for the Fine Arts in Corning, Iowa September 29 - October 28th and at the Council Bluffs Public Library from November 10 - December 1, 2007.

The Garton Connection

Funding will support Garton Elementary to conduct a 2-week Artist in Residency program with IAC artist Concetta Morales to support the creation of a tile mosaic wall display in celebration of the merger of Adams and Garton Elementary Schools in the 2007-08 school year. Students will contribute ideas, design, and construct the mosaic.

India Cultural Association of Central Iowa, Ames
Indian Classical Music Concert

With IAC funding support, on Sep 8, 2007, the India Cultural Association of Central Iowa will host a concert on Indian classical music. This will be an instrumental music concert. The concert will be performed by the music group known as "Calcutta Quartet" consisting of Mridangam player S. Sekhar, Tabla Player Subhen Chatterjee, and Violin players Deb Sankar and Jyoti Sankar.

William Penn University, Oskaloosa
Cross-Continental Spirit: Ray Blue Jazz Symposium

Grant funding supports William Penn University to host a 3-day Jazz Symposium presented by Ray Blue and band. Their "Cross Cultural" message, an experience merging American Jazz and African Jazz, will be presented to four high schools and William Penn University. The program has three dynamic components: the "History of American Jazz, musicianship/ensemble development and a cultural concert performance.

STORY! Celebrating the Art of Storytelling

IAC grant funding supports 2007 STORY!, held Sept 20-23. STORY! includes three national storytellers, Jim May, La'Ron Williams, and Jenifer Strauss, along with Iowa artists JoAnne Lower, Maureen Korte and local talent. Artists will be in schools, performing concerts and providing workshops for general audiences.
