Fiscal Year 2007 / Mini Grants: January
The Iowa Arts Council received 20 eligible Mini grant applications for the
2007 January round.
We received a total of $27,625 in requested funds. Of those, 7 were selected
for funding, totaling $9,050. Out of a possible score of 44, the highest score
of those selected for funding was 40.67 and the lowest at 36.67.
Northwestern College Music Department, Orange City
2007 Iowa Days of Percussion
$1,350
Funding supports Northwestern College to host a statewide percussion
festival on March 22-23, 2007. This event will feature clinics and master
classes by Iowa educators as well as internationally known guests plus diverse
solo and ensemble performances. Over 200 Iowa HS and college music students
and faculty will participate along with an anticipated 1000+ general audience
at selected events.
Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities, Rock Island
Jewish Music Series 2007

With the support from this grant the Jewish Federation of the Quad
Cities will be bringing to the Quad City community a multi-faceted range of
Jewish Music. Four groups will perform over a four-month period starting in
March and running through June of 2007. In March, the Maxwell Street Klezmer
Band; April, Seeds of Sun; May, Karen Barak and finishing up with Sheldon
Low in June.
ISU Creative Writing Program, Ames
Wildness Symposium Artists

The Creative Writing Program at Iowa State University will use funding
to bring two writers and two musicians for their annual Wildness Symposium:
Bill McKibben, Debra Gwartney, The Porch Stompers, and Lonna Nachtigal.
Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Sioux Center
Guest Concert - The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra

The Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra (NISO), with support from the
Iowa Arts Council, presents The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra, directed
by William LaRue Jones, on Friday, March 2, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., in the B.J.
Haan Auditorium on the campus of Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. This
is the Guest Concert of the NISO 2006-2007 "Musical Fantasies" Concert
Season.
Starmont Community School, Arlington
Wall of Hope: the Faces and Words of Northeast Iowa's People

Funding from this grant will allow each participant in this project
to have the opportunity to photographically explore the northeast Iowa region
as well as to interview and photograph people who make a difference in their
community. Artist in residence Bob Campagna would hold a photography session
from March 5-9th and a developing/framing session from March 19th-22nd for
7-12th grade students.
East Marshall Comm School District, Gilman
A Day With The 'Fox'

Our students and community will experience the art of storytelling
in several ways with the support from this grant. On February 26th, storyteller
Brian Ellis ("The Fox") will provide day programs (one K-2 and one
3-4) to share and enrich the art of storytelling. Our community will share
a story-telling experience "A Night With The Fox" led by "The
Fox" that evening. Students will develop their own stories throughout
the semester.
Temple B'nai Jeshurun, Des Moines
Shushan-a-lot: A Megillahbert and Sul-Haman Operetta

In this traditional Jewish cultural art form, the story of Queen
Esther is told through parody of a Gilbert and Sullivan-style operetta, along
with aspects of American musical theatrical shows. Author/director Laura Berkson
leads an intergenerational cast, crew and orchestra of over 50 people. Temple
B'nai Jeshurun will use grant funding for rental of sound and lighting equipment
for the production.
