Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc., Indianola
2006 Opera Iowa Statewide Educational Tour

Support for the Des Moines Metro Opera’s eight-member cast and crew for the 13-week educational tour. They will present 350 classroom workshops and 90-plus performances of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte and John Davies’ The Three Little Pigs for K-12 students.

Arts for Children Education Program (AFC)

AFC trains classroom educators to use the arts as a vehicle to teach academic subjects effectively in a setting where students both with and without disabilities learn together. The program also trains professional artists with disabilities to follow up teacher training by serving as artist-in-residence in classrooms.

 

Springville Community School District
Residency with the Daugherty McPartland Group

This six-day residency of workshops and performances will involve 4th through 12th grade students in instrumental music, vocal music and history students in the history and performance of traditional and contemporary jazz. The residency will culminate in a community performance with students playing with professional jazz musicians.

 

University of Northern Iowa
Kaleidoscope – Danny, King of the Basement

The goal of this project is to bring 500 middle school students from urban and/or economically challenged areas to a performance to share insight on how they might better deal with their ever-changing home life. Written by David S. Craig, this performance will be held at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

 

Smart Intermediate School, Davenport
Literature and Lyrics for Reading and Respect

This project will expose literature and lyrics to students who are reluctant to read. Workshops will be provided by Carol Gotman, Dave Moore, and Peter and Bethany Yarrow. Concerts will be given by Moore and the Yarrows. Community groups will be invited to participate.

The Heart is Washed in Water Then Weighed

Funding supports a 20-minute film project based on the personal experience of being a mother, artist and human being.

Multimedia Sculpture

Funding will support an installation composed of canvas and steel. Digital videos will be projected into the fragmented surfaces, conjoining both in a way that reinforces the conceptual threads of identity construction and representations of the military.

 

Marion Chamber of Commerce
Music for Seniors
$5,300

Music for Seniors brings two weeks of educational chamber music events to the senior citizens of Marion. The event will be held in venues and facilities where seniors meet. This underserved population will celebrate eastern Iowa’s ethnic and cultural heritage through interactive chamber music activities by Iowa Arts Council rostered artists Jan Boland and John Dowdall.

Forrest Spalding: The Not-So-Quiet Librarian

This one-man play about Forrest Spalding will be performed during the grand opening of the new Des Moines Central Library in April 2006. The play will be written by award-winning playwright Cynthia Mercati and performed by Tom Milligan, known for his portrayals of Henry Wallace and Grant Wood.

 

Riverside Theatre, Iowa City
Death of a Salesman

The production of this famous play by Arthur Miller will highlight Riverside Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. The production will include a number of educational outreach opportunities, including a collaboration with the local libraries and book clubs.

 

Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre
Madame Butterfly
$9,000

Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre will present two performances of Madame Butterfly. Funding will also support in-school outreach performances and one free performance of the children’s opera, Goldilocks, at the Iowa Children’s Museum. Young artists will take lead roles in Goldilocks and will also supplement the chorus in Madame Butterfly.

 

Hancher Auditorium, Iowa City
Children of Uganda
$7,000

Children of Uganda will give two performances at Hancher Auditorium for a family audience and school groups. They will also make an informal appearance at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Hancher will work with Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County to bring 180 low income parents and children to a performance.

 

Civic Music Association, Des Moines
Master Class and Concert Performance with Chanticleer

With support from Aimee Beckmann-Collier and Barbara Sletto, Civic Music will work with young local male choirs, including high school and college students in an educational forum with coaching from Chanticleer’s music director, Joseph Jennings.

 

Buffalo Bill Museum, LeClaire
The Arts Come Alive at the Buffalo Bill Museum!

This project is a presentation of 25 separate programs featuring professional storytellers, musicians, puppeteers and one-man dramatic presentations of Mark Twain and Buffalo Bill. This project will serve 5,000 new audience members over a six-month time frame.

 

Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival
2006 International Documentary Film Festival

Independent filmmakers in the United States and abroad are invited to submit films to a jury of filmmakers recognized for achievement in the genre. Winning entries will honor a personal esthetic and possess social relevancy/commentary. Regional viewers of all ages can attend free screenings at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

 

Siouxland Youth Chorus, Sioux City
KIDZSING 2006

Funding supports this choral music festival for children’s choirs. The singers in attendance will have the opportunity to receive a clinic, perform individually and in a massed festival choir — all under the direction of a nationally-renowned conductor/clinician.

 

Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company, West Liberty
2005-2006 Production
$8,600

Funding will create a community puppet production as part of the 2005-2006 season using professional artists and amateurs in West Liberty and surrounding communities. It will be developed collaboratively by groups of professional artists, musicians and a group of dedicated amateur adults. Community members will help make puppets and props, provide technical and musical support.

 

Siouxland Civic Dance Association, Sioux City
Iowa Dance Conference

Funding will support the Siouxland Civic Dance Association’s statewide dance celebration, which includes classes by Ventislav Petrov, Frank Hatchett, Germaine Goodson and others. Also included will be various lectures and discussion panels. A gala performance of notable Iowa dancers and professional clinicians will also be presented. A performance stage will provide free public entertainment.

 

Employee and Family Resources, Des Moines
Thresholds V: Native American Arts and Issues

This event will bring together central Iowa’s Native Americans and artists with prominent, national Native artist Buffy St. Marie, an Oscar-winning singer-songwriter; visual artist and Dances with Wolves translator Albert Whitehat; Inuit artist/storyteller Ray Buckley; and Peter, Paul and Mary’s conductor, Robert De Cormier for performances and discussions.

Siouxland Cinco de Mayo 2006

Funding will support Siouxland Cinco de Mayo 2006 in the area’s premier celebration of Hispanic culture. This year will highlight Mexican Christmas traditions. Olga Olivares will conduct workshops on how Mexican-Americans blend holiday traditions from two cultures. Included will be the holiday music of Mariachi Nuevo Guachenango and the pageantry of Ballet LE Grupo Folklorico Antontonilco.
