The Iowa Arts Council received 21 eligible Mini grant applications for the 2006 May round, totaling $27,435 in requested funds. Of those, 7 were selected for funding, totaling $7350. The highest score of those selected for funding was 37 and the lowest was 32.5.

 

National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library
Living with Beauty: Creating and Caring for Embellished Textiles Symposium Cedar

The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) will offer a symposium on making, identifying, and caring for traditional Czech and Slovak folk textiles. On June 8 there will be a workshop to make a unique piece of handwork. June 9-10 features noted experts Mary Kelly, Helene Cincebeaux, and Elizabeth Kurella, tours, and an opportunity to have heirlooms identified.


Barbara D. Lau
"Raising Medusa" Script Reading, Writing Retreat & Poetry Workshop

Barbara Lau will use IAC funding for a reading /critique of the first draft of her play, Raising Medusa, on July 8, at the Riverside Theatre in Iowa City. She will also write a revised script. In addition, she will lead a poetry workshop for teenagers on July 11 via Mt. Vernon Parks & Recreation, helping students articulate their feelings and offering insights into their lives.


Bo Ramsey
Stranger Blues Release & Promotion

Bo Ramsey recently finished a recording of old blues songs. Being a long time (lifetime) Iowa musician he used almost all Iowa musicians for this project. He is preparing to release this recording, "Stranger Blues," (present official release date is July 18, 2006) with the help of IAC funding, will hire a publicist so that his work may reach not only statewide, but national audiences.


Bethany Springer
C.O.P.Y.? Collaborative Project Exhibition

IAC funding will provide support for the regional and national exhibition of project C.O.P.Y.?, a collaborative initiative combining automation technology with art, designed and executed by sculpture Prof. Bethany Springer of Drake University and engineering Prof. Bryan Burkhardt of Des Moines Area Community College. C.O.P.Y.? will exhibit locally this July and in Baltimore next spring.

River Voices Storytelling Festival

River Voices Storytelling Festival June 2nd and 3rd, 2006 will teach and entertain people from all over the Midwest, through historical, healing, entertaining and moral tales, and workshops on the art of story telling, presented by National teller Dr.Rex Ellis of the Williamsburg Foundation and regional and local professional storytellers.


Performing Arts and Education Association of SW IA
Missoula Children's Theatre

PAEA, in collaboration with the Wabash Arts Camp, is presenting the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), July 10-15, 2006. MCT will conduct auditions and be in residency for the week, coaching 60 students to produce "The Frog Prince" with two performances at the Gladys Wirsig Jones auditorium at Shenandoah High School.


Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities
Java Jews

Funding will support a concert by Java Jews Klezmer band from Des Moines Iowa, on June 21st 2006. Klezmer, a folk form of music found in Eastern Europe in the 1800's, is not prevalent in the Quad Cities. We want to bring them to the community to educate people on this rarely heard form of music and give them the opportunity to enjoy it.
