The Iowa Arts Council received 16 Mini Grant applications for the month of March, totaling $21,127 in funding requests. Of the 16 applications, nine were selected for a funding total of $8,767.

Book Making Workshop
Funding for the Book Making Workshop will support Jo van Arkel, Professor at Drury
College, to facilitate a book making workshop at Clinton Community College. The
workshop is free. Students will work in small groups to create books. In addition,
Jo van Arkel will give an informative presentation in which students will learn
about the structure of books.
Iowa Composers Forum, Cedar Rapids

New Iowa Concert Music Initiative
Funding for the New Iowa Concert Music Initiative fosters the creation and performance
of new concert music by Iowa composers and performers. The initiative is a collaborative
effort between the Iowa Composers Forum, the Iowa String Teachers Association
and the Iowa Choral Directors Association. This year's collaboration will result
in forum commissions.

Greg Thatcher Retrospective
Funding for Greg Thatcher Retrospective will support the exhibit of Greg
Thatcher's work covering the past 30 years. The project will feature the internationally
exhibited Yew Tree series. The project includes a catalog and will be
widely publicized. It will be held in the Maharishi University of Management Unity
Gallery.

Central Iowa Art Fair Entertainment
Funding for the Central Iowa Art Fair will support the musical group World Port
from Des Moines. This is a juried art fair that will attract higher quality artists
and therefore create a quality art fair.

Public Programs for Embellished Textiles
The Embellished Textiles exhibit includes a series of educational programs
in partnership between the NCSML and members of local embroidery and lace guilds.
The programs will complement the NCSML summer exhibition Embellished Textiles:
Absolutely Art! The handwork demonstrations and classes conducted by guild
members will perpetuate knowledge and appreciation for traditional textile handwork.

Lamentations on the Rwandan Genocide
Pierre-Damien Mvuyekure's poetry collection, Lamentations on the Rwandan Genocide,
combines diverse linguistic and cultural traditions to offer poetic exploration
of the violence and the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. Funding will support
the publication of the collection.

Ted Kooser Day: April 8, 2006
U. S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser grew up in the Ames Historic Old Town (HOT) neighborhood.
HOT, the Ames Historical Society and Ames Public Library have partnered for Ted
Kooser Day to be held April 8, 2006. Included in this event will be readings by
Kooser, children's writing contests, a HOT walking tour guided by references from
Local Wonders, and a poetry jam.

these rich, artistic traditions.

Text and Image: An Exploration of Human Rights
The University of Iowa and Regina Catholic School will collaborate to create a
curriculum for all sophomores that combines the visual arts, literature and human
rights. During the course of one semester students will create a graphic novel
in which the subject is human rights. They will also draw a series of portraits,
create two artist books and study selected works of literature and art.
