Fiscal Year 2006 / Mini Grants: January
The Iowa Arts Council received 19 Mini Grant applications for the month of
January, totaling $25,092 in funding requests. Of the 19 applications, six were
selected for a funding total of $9,000. The scores for those selected for funding
ranged from 38.5 to 37 out of a possible score of 44.
Town & Country Arts, Dunlap
Opera Iowa Comes to Harrison County

Opera Iowa will come to Boyer Valley Community School in Dunlap to perform Three
Little Pigs for Harrison County third grade students. The students will be
bussed from five area public schools and one parochial school. In the evening
Opera Iowa will present Cosi fan Tutte for Harrison county families.
Edgar East, Waterloo
Afro Latin Songs, Drums and Dances

Musician Ed East will create a company which will perform folkloric, Latin American
songs and dances of African origins accompanied by folkloric percussion ensemble.
He will be assisted by musician Paul Cunliffe, Jim Dreier, Karin Stein and dancer/choreographer
Dan Starks.
Central College, Pella
Blackfriars Stage Company

Central College plans to bring the Blackfriars Stage Company to campus for a three-day
engagement in March. The troupe will perform three shows, participate in discussion
sessions and lead six workshops for area high school students, college students
and community participants.

Jewish Folk Music in Iowa

The University of Iowa Hillel will host performances in Iowa City and Des Moines
of Jewish folk music and screenings of Yale Strom's documentary, A Man From
Munkacs: Gypsy Klezmer. The events will combine talents of Iowa musicians,
Oleg Timofeyev and Natalia Timofeyeva, with celebrated guest artists Norbert Stachel
and Yale Strom.
KCCK Radio, Cedar Rapids
Jazz at the 'Brary

Jazz at the 'Brary is a live jazz education program with KCCK jazz radio producers
and a jazz quartet led by IAC roster artist, Dennis McPartland, using live music,
narration and visuals to explore the lives, careers and music of jazz greats Thelonius
Monk and Charles Mingus. The free program will be performed February 3 at the
Cedar Rapids Public Library and on February 10 at the Iowa City Public Library.
Alice McGary, Ames
Fireflies - A Sound Recording of Iowa Music

The CD of Fireflies — a musical recording of the Barn Owl Band,
the Porch Stompers, and SlowPoke — will include the original work of musicians
Alice McGary and Rick Exner. The CD will be produced in a newly created home recording
studio.
